Hidradenitis suppurativa, also known as acne inversa, is a chronic skin disease marked by small to medium sized subcutaneous lumps called abscesses. These occur in areas where skin rub together, like the underarms, underneath the breasts, inner thighs, groin and buttocks.Though it occurs in apocrine gland-bearing areas, the actual cause of hidradenitis suppurativa is not known.
Signs and Symptoms of Hidradenitis Suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa begins with small abscesses and then spreads to larger areas. In advanced stages, the abscesses become large and often open up and leak pus. Small tunnel like sinuses begin to form, interconnecting the abscesses.
There will be inflammation with severe pain, especially when moving. Heavy scarring and keloid formation in the affected areas are also common.
Like other skin diseases, hidradenitis suppurativa is also embarrassing and usually goes untreated, till it becomes serious. Apart from the physical discomfort, it can cause mental stress, anxiety and depression.

- Clean the affected area with water and mild soap. Be sure to wash very well and remove any traces of the soap used.
